Produced by the world-famous Asashi Refining, BullionBee is proud to offer the 1 oz Reverse Proof Buffalo Silver Round as a perfect way to start investing in silver! Silver rounds and coins are shaped nearly identical; however, rounds are not issued by governmental mints and lack a face value, which provides an excellent alternative for those looking to invest in silver without the premiums associated with bullion coins!
Asahi Refining, an offspring company of Asahi Holdings, was first established in Tokyo, Japan in 1952 when Asahi Holdings acquired the nearly 200-year-old John Matthey gold & silver refining business located in the US and Canada. Using these refineries, Asahi created new products with the same classic Johnson Matthey style, making them highly desirable for collectors and investors. Known as one of the most successful precious metal refining and recycling operations in Japan, the company has become one of the most successful precious metals firms in the world.
The Asahi Refining Reverse Proof Buffalo Round is inspired by the famous Buffalo Nickel designed by legendary American sculptor James Earle Fraser, which was minted in 1913. Contrary to being called the American Buffalo Gold coin, buffalo do not roam the American west! Actual buffalo are indigenous to Africa (cape buffalo) and South Asia (water buffalo). The animal depicted in this coin is the American Bison, also found in predominately Poland (European Bison), but spread with reintroduction programs across Europe.
This common misnomer generally stems from early European settlers which confused the two large, horned, oxlike animals of the Bovidae family. Easy distinctions to know the difference between the two animals are the beards and horns. Buffalo tend to have large, noticeably arced horns, and do not possess beards, while Bison horns are short, sharp, and possess long protruding facial hair!
The obverse side of the round features a design of the famous American Bison, Black Diamond, who lived in New York’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century, representing the majesty and glory of the American West to the millions of Americans who visited him. The round's reverse features the face of a Native American Chieftain based on the faces of Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa, which Fraser combined, facing right.
Along with Black Diamond facing left on the ground, the obverse side of the round features weight and purity. The reverse features the word "Liberty" and Asahi Refining logo along with the Native American Chieftain.
